Renting A Motorbike In Vietnam? Read This First

Every year, thousands of foreigners rent motorbikes in Vietnam thinking that if the rental shop hands them the keys, they must be legal to ride.
That’s not how it works.
Rental shops rent you a bike – they generally don’t check if you’re legally licensed to ride in Vietnam. That’s your responsibility.
1️⃣ An International Driving Permit (IDP) isn’t always valid.
Vietnam recognizes IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. However, countries like the United States and Canada mainly issue IDPs under the 1949 Geneva Convention, which Vietnam does not recognize.
Having an “international licence” doesn’t automatically mean you can legally ride here.
2️⃣ The rules depend on your legal status.
* Tourists need a licence recognized by Vietnam.
* Some long-term residents can convert an eligible foreign licence, while others must obtain a Vietnamese licence.
* For Việt Kiều, the rules depend on legal residency status – not heritage.
3️⃣ Getting a Vietnamese licence
The process includes a theory test and a practical riding test. Currently, the motorcycle theory exam is only available in Vietnamese.
4️⃣ The biggest risk isn’t the traffic police.
The biggest risk is after an accident.
If you’re riding illegally under Vietnamese law, your travel or medical insurance may refuse to cover:
• Medical bills
• Motorcycle damage
• Third-party liability
A paperwork mistake could end up costing far more than any traffic fine.
Before renting a bike, don’t just ask, “Can I rent it?” Ask, “Can I legally ride it in Vietnam?”
A few minutes of research could save you thousands of dollars and a lot of stress.
